Meet your Coaches

Ken Bouthillier

Kenny is new to the Desert Youth Hockey Association.  He plays a crucial role in the development of our Bantam AAA team and to the DYHA organization as a whole.  He is the assistant coach to Todd Collins for the DYHA AAA Bantam team and participates in many of the on ice programs DYHA offers throughout the year.

Kenny’s playing experience includes Shattuck St Mary’s Bantam AAA, Soo Indians Midget AAA, and juniors with the Fairbanks Ice Dogs, NAHL.  After committing to Air Force Academy he later suffered a career ending injury.

Kenny now enjoys coaching where he has seen similar successes to those of his playing years.  He was the Head Coach for One Hockey AAA 92 & 94, Assistant Coach for One Hockey 90 & 91, WSHL Jr. B League teams El Paso Rhinos & Peoria Coyotes, and Fairbanks Ice Dogs NAHL Jr. A.  He was also a scout and consultant for the Fairbanks Ice Dogs, NAHL Jr. A.

Kenny’s commitment to player development and team success can be seen on the ice every week.  We are looking forward to his contributions to the DYHA organization and the AAA program.

Todd Collins

Todd is a Minnesota native who is now an elite hockey coach in the state of Arizona.  Todd has now instructed and coached for over 20 years, with his expertise being in Power Skating and Stick handling.  Todd has also coached 30 plus players that have now moved on to Division 1, Major Junior or the NHL.

Since coaching in Arizona he has coached at all levels varying from Mite Novice AAA to Midget AAA and Tier 2 Juniors in the WSHL.  In addition, Todd carries his Level 4 Advanced Coaching Certification and from 1999-2006 Todd was a USA Hockey Arizona State Camp Evaluator.

Todd has always had an extreme passion and knowledge for the game of hockey.  Playing since he was a child, he then introduced the game to both of his sons.  His son Dusty just finished his first full professional season with the Arizona Sundogs, where his team won the CHL title.  He has also spent time in the AHL after completing a college career at Northern Michigan University.  His youngest son Dakota, a successful 16 yr old junior player with a very bright future in hockey, will be assisting with the camp this summer.

Currently, Todd is the Executive Director/GM of Team Northwest AAA hockey and is currently the Head Coach for the DYHA Bantam AAA hockey team.  Here is what some others within the hockey community have said about Todd.

Ron Filion

Ron Filion is well known to hockey fans of Arizona as the former General Manager and Head Coach of the Phoenix Roadrunners of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL).  In addition, over the past twenty years of involvement in professional and youth hockey, Filion played 12 years as a professional in the U.S., Canada and Europe; was general manager and head coach of Cholet (France) of the European First Division.

Ron was instrumental in the development of the expansion Phoenix Roadrunners over five years ago.  Under his oversight, the program was developed and launched with tremendous success in attaining the ECHL playoffs in just its second season.

Ron has been presented with the opportunity to enhance the youth program and operations of DYHA/Oceanside Ice Arena for Arizona hockey players and is committed to upholding and advancing the recognition and success DYHA has attained within Arizona and North America.

Ron originally hails from Quebec, Canada and graduated from St-Jerome College in Quebec.  He played professionally in Canada, France, Switzerland and the United States.

Ron is also a Director/Partner/Head Instructor in the nationally recognized Lemieux Academy AAA program.  Lemieux Academy 96 AAA calls Oceanside Ice Arena home for its 2008-09 seasons.

David Spina

David hails from Mesa Arizona where he grew up playing in the DYHA organization from Mites through Bantams.  He then went on to play junior hockey in the NAHL and USHL as well as the US Junior National Team, and college hockey at Boston College.

He is currently enjoying a successful professional hockey career with the Phoenix Coyotes organization.  This past season he played for the San Antonio Rampage, the top affiliate of the Coyotes, AHL, where he scored 50 pts. in 76 regular season games.  He’s been playing professional hockey for the past 3 seasons.

David’s talent, hard work, and dedication to the game have made him a top prospect for the Coyotes.  David spends the majority of his off season training in Arizona and is excited to give back to the organization where he started, DYHA.

Bryan Esner

This Paradise Valley native and former DYHA player has had a very successful career in hockey.  Bryan’s hard work has led him beyond the minor hockey ranks at DYHA to juniors (NAHL), NCAA (Northeastern), and professionally in the ECHL & AHL.  Last season Bryan finished with the Pensacola Ice Pilots where he recorded 49 points in 55 games.

Bryan will be training in Phoenix in July and August before next year’s training camps begin.  He will be assisting with DYHA summer camps, giving back to the organization where he began.

Brock Ballard

Brock has spent the past 12 years teaching young players at Robby Glantz International Power Skating Camps.  Brock runs over 60 programs year round including the De Raff Hockey School in Bad Tolls, Germany.

He has coached all levels of players, including Pros and Division 1 College Players and is considered one of the best power skating instructors in the valley.  Brock specializes in teaching youth hockey players how to skate faster.

He will be assisting the DYHA organization with ongoing skating instruction throughout the upcoming 2008-09 season

John Kosobud

John is originally from Fargo N.D. but has called Phoenix home for the past 6 years.  As a former player, John has played at a variety of levels including the juniors (USHL), college (Concordia College), and professional ranks (ECHL, AHL, WCHL).

John has also spent time developing young players for the past 15 years at various hockey schools and summer camps including Peak Performance Hockey Schools and International Hockey Schools, both in Minnesota.

John now spends time working with DYHA teams developing player and team skills. His son plays Squirts at DYHA.

Dakota Collins

At the young age of 16, Dakota is already an accomplished junior hockey player with a very bright future in the game.  His physically size and soft hands with the puck are a rarity at his age.

The youngest son of Todd Collins, Dakota has spent the last 2 seasons playing junior hockey for the Phoenix Polar Bears (WSHL) and the Fargo-Moorhead Jets (NAHL).  He was selected as the 3rd overall pick in the 2007 USHL Futures Draft by the Sioux City Musketeers.  He was the youngest player to be selected in the NAHL (Fargo-Mud. Jets).  He is on the protected list for Spokane Chiefs (WHL), Major Junior Canada.  In 2008 he was selected to the University of North Dakota prospective recruits list for 2010.

Dakota will be assisting the coaching staff at DYHA this summer.  He is an outstanding player that leads by example and will be a great attribute on the ice at camp in 2008
